Your Go-To Guide For Movie Releases in 2023

What's 2023 set to bring us? Well, directors of the calibre of Steven Spielberg, Damien Chazelle, M. Night Shyamalan, Steven Soderbergh, Florian Zeller, Michael B. Jordan, Taika Waititi, James Mangold¸ Christopher McQuarrie, Greta Gerwig, Christopher Nolan, Nia DaCosta, Denis Villeneuve and Paul King are all set to release their movies, and that can only mean we are in for a cinematic feast of a year to look forward too!  

Here is our annual sketch of the year ahead and what you can enjoy on the big screens at Showcase Cinemas!

17: Shazam! Fury of the Gods - Now Booking

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the sequel to 2019’s Shazam! The second in the series sees Zachary Levi returning as Superhero Shazam and also boasts Helen Mirren amongst its cast.

The sequel will pit Shazam and his family against the Daughters of Atlas played by aforementioned Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu.

With the shake up of the DC extended universe it remains to be seen whether we will see Zachary Levi return as Shazam in a third film or as part of another character’s movie but we are very excited to see this one.

April

3: Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves - Now Booking

Dungeons & Dragons is arguably the most famous roleplaying game of all time and in 2023 we are gifted this magical world on the big screen. The movie will follow a team of thieves who help the wrong person steal the wrong thing and now work to fix their mistakes and save the world. Honour Among Thieves looks to blend action, comedy, fantasy and more.

The cast provides some of the biggest names in Hollywood including Chris Pine, Hugh Grant, Rege-Jean Page and Michelle Rodriguez.

Expect beautiful and awesome scenery with most of the film being shot in Northern Ireland in addition to Iceland.

7: The Super Mario Bros Movie - Now Booking

The hotly anticipated Super Mario Bros Movie from Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment arrives at Showcase Mar 31st 2023.

This voice cast is jam packed with stars with Chris Pratt taking up the role of Mario, Charlie Day voicing Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach.

The latest trailer included many of the familiar video game surroundings of Mario including Mario Kart track Rainbow Road and Donkey Kong fighting Mario in a Smash Bros coliseum. 

We are predicting this one to be a huge hit for the full family!

14: Renfield

May

5: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

On May 5th we will be watching the third of James Gunn’s Marvel trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. With James recently being announced as co-CEO of DC studios this could be his final involvement with Marvel. 

Volume 3 will see Will Poulter take up the role of Adam Warlock and he will star alongside your usual Guardians favourites including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff and Dave Bautista.

James Gunn has teased major deaths in this finale. This one could tug at the heartstrings so be sure to remember your tissues!

19: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

Directed by Kelly Fremon Craig; starring Rachel McAdams, Abby Fortson 

19: Fast X

Zooming into Showcase Cinemas on May 19th we have the 10th installment of the Fast & the Furious franchise Fast X. This is tipped to be the penultimate in the series with the final movie scheduled for release February 2024.

Many of the familiar ensemble cast are returning including Vin Diesel as Dominic Torreto, Tyrese Gibson as Roman Pearce and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw. There are also some new faces making their first Fast outing including Brie Larson and Jason Mamoa. 

Plot details are tightly under wraps but the possibilities are endless with a previous installment even taking the Fast Family to Space!

26: The Little Mermaid

May 26th sees the latest Disney live action remake with Director Rob Marshall’s (Mary Poppins Returns) taking on the classic Little Mermaid.

Halle Bailey is portraying the character of Ariel and we are expecting this to be a faithful adaptation of the animated classic. Elsewhere in the cast Melissa McCarthy will play sea witch Ursula and Little Women’s Jonah Hauer-King will take on the role of Prince Eric.

Much like the original fans can expect some unforgettable tunes in the live action remake with songwriter Alan Menken teaming up with musical superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda for 4 new songs as well as all the beloved classics.

 

June

2: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

Directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, Justin Thompson; starring Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld

9: Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

2023 sees Transformers return to the big screen, its first outing since 2018’s Bumblebee. Rise of the Beasts is the seventh in the Transformers live action movie series. Fans of the 1996 animated series Beast Wars:Transformers will be highly anticipating this one with many of the characters and plot themes from the cartoon being adapted for the movie. 

Star Anthony Ramos has stated this is “unlike any Transformers movie fans have seen before.”

Creed II alumni Steven Caple Jr. takes the director's chair for this one, releasing June 9th.

16: The Flash

Directed by Andy Muschietti; starring Ezra Miller, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Michael Shannon

30: Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

On June 30th we are treated to the return of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This is the 5th installment in the series and is the first since 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. This is the first film in the Indiana Jones series not to be directed by Steven Spielberg with James Mangold (Ford vs Ferrari)  leading the project.

Not much is known about the plot of the movie but the director did reveal some minor details in a recent interview stating:

“But is there a relic in this movie that possesses a kind of power, or may possess a kind of power? And is it based on history and scientific speculation? Yes."

Indy’s Goddaughter is played by none other than Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge whilst the villain ‘Voller’ is played by the always excellent Mads Mikkelsen.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny hits Showcase Cinemas June 30, 2023.

21: Barbie

In July we get the hotly anticipated Barbie movie from director Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the titular character and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Not much is known about the plot of the movie however when stills of the production were leaked earlier in 2022 fans excitement hit peak levels. Barbie promises to deliver a visual delight and a lot of Pink! Look out for this one releasing in Showcase Cinema 21st of July 2023.

21: Oppenheimer

Directed by Christopher Nolan; starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Rami Malik, Kenneth Branagh 

28: The Marvels

 The third cinematic release of Marvel Phase five has the potential to be one of the biggest with the return of Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers  alongside Ms Marvel aka Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau. 

Fans of Marvel will be familiar with both Ms Marvel and Monica Rambeau with both making appearances in the Marvel TV universe already. 

In usual Marvel fashion, details on the plot of the movie are extremely thin but with The Marvels originally scheduled to release in July 2022 anticipation is high for this one!

 

August

4: The Meg 2: The Trench

Directed by Ben Wheatley; starring Jason Statham, Sienna Guillory

11: Gran Turismo

Directed by Neill Blomkamp; starring David Harbour, Darren Barnet, Orlando Bloom

11: Haunted Mansion

On August 11th Disney continues the trend of live action releases with The Haunted Mansion. The first feature film was released back in 2003 and starred Eddie Murphy, the new 2023 version much like the 2003 movie will be based off the popular theme park ride that has been around since 1969. 

Directing will be Justin Simien, the filmmaker behind the excellent Dear White People and the cast is jam packed full of stars including Roasrio Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jared Leto, Winona Ryder, Jamie Lee Curtis & more.

We have an official synopsis from Disney which provides a little insight into the overarching story:

“A single mom named Gabbie hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to help exorcise their newly bought mansion; after discovering it is inhabited by ghosts."

We are hopeful the 2023 version of The Haunted Mansion encapsulates the perfect blend of comedy and horror that the theme park attraction has become so famous for. Prepare for a haunting with Showcase Cinemas on August 11th!

22: The Expendables 4

The world’s top action stars reunite for another outing in The Expendables 4 releasing September 22nd. Veterans Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Slyverster Stallone are joined by newcomers Curtis Jackson, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa and more. 

 Expect a lot of action, adventure, explosions and one liners.

6: Kraven the Hunter

Directed by J.C. Chandor; starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ariana DeBose, Russell Crowe, Alessandro Nivola

20: Trolls 3

On November 17th get ready for another all-star, rainbow coloured, glitter covered, musical chapter of the Trolls story! 

There is little detail around the plot for Trolls 3, but Poppy and Branch, voiced by Anna Kendrick and Justin Timeberlake, have been confirmed but no other casting has been declared.

We got a feelin’ inside our bones, that this is going to be a colourful adventure

 

November

3: Dune: Part Two 

Dune: Part Two will be a continuation of Dune, based on the second half of the epic sci-fi novel by Frank Herbert. It will follow the journey of Paul Atreides (Timothee Chalamet) as he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee, and to seek revenge against those who destroyed his family.

Denis Villeneuve returns to the director's chair to take us back to Arrakis on November 3rd. The sequel will see plenty of new faces, Christopher Walken as Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan. But with Tim Blake Nelson in a mystery role, it’s got our curiosity racing.

December

15: Wonka

On December 15th, an all-star cast, including Timothée Chalamet, Keegan-Michael Key

Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, and many more, tell us the origin story of the eccentric and vivid Willy Wonka. 

From the team behind Paddington (2014) this musical prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate factory, will give us a look at Wonka as a young inventor before he grew into the legendary chocolatier.


Not much is known about the plot of the movie but the suspense is terrible, and we hope it will last!

20: Ghostbusters Sequel

Directed by Gil Kenan; starring Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard

29: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom 

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom may still be quite a while away, releasing December 29th, but we’ve got some information to tide us over in the meantime! 

With only a brief plot summary, “Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation," we cannot tell much about the storyline. However, Willem Dafoe as Nuidius Vulko, and Nicole Kidman playing Atlanna, have been confirmed to return for the sequel. With new cast members Indya Moore  & Pilou Asbæk in a mystery role.

Director James Wan has given fans some hints and has stated:

 "Black Manta will be back, and hopefully, he'll be causing a lot more trouble than he did in the first one,"

 "The second one is a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant in the world we are living in today. That's where it wants to go"
