Oscars Nominations 2022

The Oscars nominations that celebrate films from 2021 are in and now the film world gears itself for the 94th Academy Awards!

Here are some of the facts and the figures the nominations gave us...

Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog is up for 12 prizes, with Dennis Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi novel, Dune receiving 10 nominations, and both are closely followed by Belfast and West Side Story with 7.

Campion is the first woman to be nominated for best director twice; she was previously nominated for The Piano in 1994 and won for best screenplay that same year.

Dame Judie Dench is nominated for best supporting actress for Belfast, having already won the award for Shakespeare in Love in 1998 and Olivia Colman is nominated for the third time; previously having won the best actress Oscar in 2018 for The Favourite and was nominated last year for The Father.

Kenneth Brangah is nominated for Best Director, original screenplay and film for Belfast, and becomes the first person to secure Oscar nominations in seven different categories, having previously been up for live action short (Swan Song (1992)), best adapted screenplay (Hamlet (1996)), best supporting actor (My Week with Marilyn (2011)) and best actor (Henry V (1989)).

Troy Kotsur’s best supporting actor nomination for CODA makes him only the second deaf actor to be nominated; following in the footsteps of his CODA co-star Marlee Matlin, who won for Children of a Lesser God in 1986.

This year’s nominations have thrown up two couples within the 20 acting nominations: Penélope Cruz (Parallel Mothers) and Javier Bardem (Being The Ricardos) have been married since 2010, while Jessie Plemons and Kristen Dunst - both nominated for The Power of the Dog - are engaged.

Steven Spielberg’s best director nomination for West Side Story places him alongside Billy Wilder and just behind Martin Scorsese’s 9, and William Wyler’s 12 nominations in the category.
