A look at Disney's Wish

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Wish is an animated musical-comedy welcoming audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force – a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe – the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico – to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Wish marks the 62nd animated feature film for Disney, released in the studios’ 100 year anniversary, and stars the vocal talents of Ariana DeBose (West Side Story (2021)) as Asha, Chris Pine (Star Trek and Wonder Woman) as Magnifico, and Disney legend Alan Tudyk, who has voiced characters in every Disney film since 2012.

Directors Chris Buck (Frozen (2013)) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (making her directorial debut), recently spoke about their film and how it will pay homage to the studio’s legacy. Easter Eggs are abound with fans able to pick up references to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Sleeping Beauty (1959), Buck’s favourite Disney film, Pinocchio (1940) and Veerasunthorn’s favourite Dumbo (1941).

“We wanted to make a movie that celebrates the joy of Disney and make a movie for the fans. It's a hundred years. The Disney audience has kept us going and kept this studio going, and so there's so much of that," said Buck.

The early reviews for Wish had been wonderful, all very timely to celebrate a studio that has entertained us for 100 fantastic years.

Here are a few of those reviews.

Variety

“Wish is ENCHANTING & DAZZLING. A magical, inspiring fairy tale & heroine for a new generation. I was swept away by the animation & musical splendor that blends classical & modern techniques brilliantly. Ariana DeBose & Chris Pine shine bright."

The Wrap

"Combining next gen technology with timeless storytelling, Wish looks like nothing you’ve seen before and feels exactly like your favourite Disney animated feature — whatever it is. A celebration of hope, community and self-actualisation and 100 years of Disney magic. Loved it"

ScreenRant

“Wish is absolutely beautiful in every way! A fantastic celebration of 100 years of Disney magic with incredible music, stunning animation, and a story full of heart. Ariana Debose is fantastic and Chris Pine is magnificent as a Disney villain.”

Variety

"Wish is the celebration of 100 years of the famed studio with Easter Eggs galore. Surprisingly, thematically, it was more rich than I would have anticipated. I'd argue, maybe a little depressing?

Ariana DeBose brings the house down as one of our great modern-day princesses. The villain’s song, 'This Is The Thanks I Get,' is out of this world by Chris Pine. The foot tapping group number 'Knowing What I Know Now' is my favourite. ‘This Wish’ will likely be the big push. Gorgeous animation."

Wish is released at Showcase Cinemas on Friday and tickets can be booked here
