10 things to know about IF

Firstly, what's the film about?

A young girl named Bea gains the ability to see people's imaginary friends known as "IFs" for short, who have been abandoned by the kids they helped. Bea then discovers that her neighbour, Cal, has the same ability.

How’s that for a premise?! 

Yes, after the huge success of A Quiet Place (2018) and A Quiet Place II (2020), John Krasinski is back behind the camera, in the director’s chair with the live action and animated IF (2024).

So what do we know? Here goes with a top 10 facts:

1)      John Krasinski has written, directed and produced IF.   

2)      Krasinski told the press that the inspiration to bring IF to the screen was because after directing horrors he “figured I needed to make a movie for my kids".  

3)      Ryan Reynolds also produced the movie, alongside Krasinski.  

4)      The cast features Cailey Fleming as Bea who can see IF’s; Ryan Reynolds as Cal, Bea’s neighbour who can also see IF’s;  John Krasinski as Bea’s father; Fiona Shaw as Bea’s grandmother; Alan Kim; Liza Colón-Zayas; Bobby Moynihan.

5)      Voices – this is an all-star voice cast, which consists of Steve Carell as Blue, Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Blossom; Emily Blunt as Unicorn; Matt Damon as Sunny; Maya Rudolph as Ally; Jon Stewart as Robot; Sam Rockwell as Guardian; Awwkafina as Bubble; Blake Lively as Octopuss; George Clooney as Spaceman, Matthew Rhys as Ghost; Bradley Cooper as Ice; Amy Schumer as Gummy Bear; Keegan-Michael Key as Slime and John Krasinski as Marshmallow 

6)      Cailey Fleming played the young Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).

7)      The film is dedicated to Louis Gossett Jr, who voices Lewis the bear. Tragically the actor, who won an Oscar for his stunning performance as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, starring opposite Richard Gere in An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) passed away this year on March 29.

8)      Krasinski has chosen Polish cinematographer Janusz Kamiński to be his director of photography. Kamiński, who is famous for his collaborations with Steve Spielberg, won his two Oscars for his work on Spielberg films, Schindler’s List (1993) and Saving Private Ryan (1998).      

9)      The title of the film, IF is not meant to be the word ‘if’ but an abbreviation of the term ‘imaginary friend.’

10)  John Krasinski and Steve Carrell worked together on the American adaptation of The Office.
