My Beautiful Laundrette Poster
CAST: Saeed Jaffrey, Roshan Seth, Daniel Day-Lewis
DIRECTOR: Stephen Frears
RUN TIME: 1 hour 38 minutes
RELEASE DATE: 03/08/2021

Set in the Pakistani community of London, this funny and acutely observed film follows the fortunes of handsome young Pakistani Briton Omar who, together with his white friend Johnny, takes over a run-down laundrette. Together they transform it into a gaudy, neon-lit palace complete with muzak and video screens. Against a background of racial tension and poverty in the rough London suburb, their own relationship, portrayed with tenderness and passion, blossoms to love. The film was the unquestionable hit of the 1985 Edinburgh film festival and was radical in challenging preconceptions of what it means to be an Asian in Britain.

Join us at Showcase Cinemas for our Flashback screening of the original 1985 film this summer.
