A team of supervillains is given one last shot at redemption by taking on missions that will most likely get them killed.
We are very excited to see Warner Brothers' next DC Comics adaptation. Without a superhero in sight (or maybe a cameo for one or two!), the Suicide Squad of supervillains will have their chance in the spotlight. Officially designated Task Force X, the Suicide Squad are a secret team who have been imprisoned by the United States government. The team undertakes high-risk missions in exchange for amnesty: If their missions prove successful then their sentences are reduced.
As in the DC comic books, the squad members are injected with micro bombs which can detonated if they try to escape! We're not sure as to their power as a deterrent in the film but expect each member to be suitably discouraged from leaving the squad.
The man at the helm of the big screen adaptation is David Ayer. Ayer's previous movie was the World War II drama, Fury, starring Brad Pitt. Additionally Ayer is also an acclaimed screenwriter with scripts such as Training Day, The Fast and the Furious and S.W.A.T., so no surprise that he has also penned the script for Suicide Squad.
The writer and director has called his summer blockbuster an "an insane movie," and has kept us fans on tenterhooks during the film's shoot by using social media to drop images of the stunning posters, weaponry and locations, which has only added to the excitement and anticipation.
So who are some of the members of the Suicide Squad recruited by intelligence officer Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis?
The Joker played Jared Leto, is the ultimate psychopathic supervillain, with a penchant for the odd tattoo.
Floyd Lawton, a.k.a. Deadshot, played by Will Smith is an expert marksman and assassin who dotes on his daughter.
Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn (formerly Dr. Harleen Quinzel), a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, who has been corrupted by The Joker and now wields a baseball bat with deadly effect.
Joel Kinnaman is Rick Flag, the field leader of the Suicide Squad who reports directly to Officer Waller.
Jai Courtney is Captain Boomerang, an assassin whose weapon of choice is the deadly boomerang.
Jay Hernandez is Chato Santana/El Diablo, a former Los Angeles gang member who has powers allowing him to summon flames.
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje is Killer Croc, "a cannibal with rage issues" as described by Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who suffers from a skin condition that causes him to develop reptilian features.
Karen Fukuhara portrays Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana, an expert martial artist and swordswoman, she is also Rick Flag's bodyguard and friend.
Will Smith recently told Comic Con that he saw the film as "bad versus evil" and we cannot wait for battle to commence!
Suicide Squad is out at Showcase Cinemas in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D from August 5.
